Knightsbridge is the fashionable area in London, between Chelsea and Kensington, where Harrods department store, designer shops and a very few expensive homes are located. Part of its mystique comes from the fact that the wealthy and powerful from all over the world are drawn to shop there; newspapers referred to the ‘Knightsbridge trap’ in the recent case of General Pinochet.Knightsbridge’s epicentre is Sloane Square, an area inhabited by Sloane Rangers (well-to-do young women fashionably dressed with chic headscarves tied at the chin). Property developers, including The Prudential insurance company, have faced great opposition to their plans, particularly those for Knightsbridge Green opposite Harrods, because existing residents have strong support from Westminster Council.
